Sailor 1911 Naginata Togi Fountain Pen

The Sailor Naginata Togi nib provides variation of line width by changing the angle of the nib on the page.  It also has a degree of flex, due to its long tines.  It is available in Medium Fine, Medium, and Broad.  This 21ct nib comes with rhodium or gold finishing.  It is named for the Japanese weapon, the nib resembling the shape of the blade.

The Sailor Naginata Togi is presented in a special pen with a cap ring engraved “Special Nib” using the Cloisonne technique.  It comes in a distinctive box.

Demand for these nibs outstripped supply and, in 2016, Sailor stopped taking orders to concentrate on training apprentices and building up stock before making them available again.

The Naginata Togi nib was developed by Nobuyoshi Nagahara, possibly the greatest ever nib maker.  To learn more about Mr Nagahara see “Additional Information”.

The Naginata Togi nib was developed by Nobuyoshi Nagahara, possibly the greatest ever nib maker.  He worked for Sailor from 1946 until he retired in 2011 and created many unique and extraordinary nibs. He was born and grew up in Hiroshima.  In 1945, aged 12, he survived the atomic bombing of that city.  The following year he joined the Sailor Pen Company in the nib department, and stayed there until he retired in 2011.  His working life was devoted to creating nibs of outstanding quality and ingenuity, and he toured the world giving pen clinics.  He died in 2015. His aim was to create fountain pens that could equal the line variation calligraphers obtain from a brush.  He did this in many ways, with unique shapes, nibs joined one atop another and cunning grinds of the tipping material. Since he retired, his son Yukio has been responsible for Sailo r specialist nibs. Nobuyoshi Nagahara
