The Sailor 1911 Maki-E Tale of Genji Ivory fountain pen is as luxurious as it is beautiful.

Although this is a Sailor 1911 at heart - with all the quality and reliability that we have come to expect from a writing instrument made in Japan - the Sailor 1911 Maki-E Tale of Genji fountain pen is made sublime by the decoration of the cap and barrel with Maki-e (蒔絵, or "sprinkled picture") art. Although this is called "sprinkled", maki-e pictures are actually made by the meticulous application of flakes of coloured enamel, mother-of-pearl, and precious metals, then sealed and varnished with a further layer of clear resin. This is a pains-taking process, and maki-e artists have great status in the Japanese art world. The Sailor 1911 Maki-e Tale of Genji Ivory fountain pen is the work of Kosen Oshita-san.

The accompaniments of this luxury writing instrument are in 14 carat gold, comprising the cap's finial band, clip, and double waist-band, and the pen's finial band and ink feed system. The broad cap band is inscribed "Sailor Japan founded 1911". The converter supplied with the pen also has gold plating on the plunger filler mechanism. The Sailor 1911 Maki-e Tale of Genji Ivory fountain pen is supplied with the excellent 14 carat gold Sailor nib in Medium.

The Tale of Genji (源氏物語, or "Genji Monogatari") is the story of an Emperor's son who is removed from the line of succession and demoted to a commoner because of his love for a low-ranking concubine, and thus given the name Minamoto ( 源 ). The story thereafter describes Genji's romantic life and the practices of Japanese aristocratic society. The book, sometimes called the world's first novel, is regarded as a classic even though the original text is almost unreadable to the modern Japanese reader.
