We've now had a chance to test this pen, and we're delighted to say that the pre-release hype is entirely justified. The lava / neoprene mix looks great with the bronze appointments, the material giving a pleasing feel and positive grip. It is slightly hygroscopic, so always has a dry feel. (Because of this, we'd advise paying a bit of attention to cleaning the front of the pen after filling). It's a fairly heavy pen, the balance is perfect. So far so good, but the real surprise is the frankly astonishing 23 carat Palladium nib. It delivers a good, fairly wet line with no effort at all. It really is a superb nib, making this a pen of great character that will lead you to look for reasons to use it at every opportunity!

text

Visconti Say: We conceived the Homo Sapiens writing instruments range for people who use pens, for those to whom their fountain pen continues to represent a constant companion, a friend with which to share daily the civilized pleasure of handwriting.

The material in this pen is as old as the world: lava spewed from the bowels of the earth, forming the Etna volcano. It has several characteristics that render it uniquely appropriate for the manufacturing of writing instruments. Visconti has successfully produced a material containing over 50% of pure basaltic lava, catalysed together with resin in a formula - patented and secret -whose extraordinary characteristics transform it into a material perfectly material to manufacture writing instruments.

Visconti lava is:

Virtually unbreakable: It has a high degree of resilience.
Flameproof - Visconti lava has a resistance to heat of over 100°C.
Slightly hygroscopic, it feels dry at all times.
Dense at touch, allowing a relaxed finger grip.
An unquestionably new material employed in the making of fountain pens.

Inspiration was drawn from the Bronze Age for all metallic parts. The Bronze Age coincided with the development of writing, marking the eve of human civilization. The clip, the rings and the metal accessories -with the exception of the piston only- are all in bronze: natural bronze like the antique formula, which does not require plating or protection treatments which alter its original almost pink colour, and which can be easily polished. The high vacuum power filler is made of titanium, the only material completely resistant to ink corrosion.

The 23 ct 950 Palladium DREAMTOUCH Nib

With Homo Sapiens Visconti introduces the first ever 23kt 950 palladium Dreamtouch nib.
Dreamtouch is the term we coined to describe a nib that requires no pressure whatsoever in order to write: it traces in a gentle way thoughts and words - dream handwriting.

Palladium has interesting physical features for the production of fountain pen nibs; its use in nib manufacturing is possible now thanks to new metal-fusion technologies, particularly the welding of iridium tips. Palladium melts at much higher temperatures than gold: 1552°C against 1063°C, so it has better mechanical characteristics, being more durable than gold, but more challenging to work with. The international classification system lists only four precious metals: platinum, palladium, gold and silver. Palladium gives:

Value: the 23 ct 950/1000 palladium nib is the highest purity ever used for a nib in the history of fountain pens. It contains 95% pure palladium against 75% pure gold in the 18 ct nib and 58% gold in the 14 ct nib.
Flexibility and Memory: are the best for any type of writing, 30% better when compared to the same nib in 18 ct gold.
Resistance to ink corrosion has been improved up to 100% thanks to the pureness of the material to an extent to which no protection treatment of the plating is needed.
Originality:
the palladium nib will render even more exclusive your Visconti, either as a collection piece or as a daily use fountain pen.
