Previous Visconti Homo Sapiens fountain pens have been manufactured from the basalt of Mount Etna – the famous “lava pens” – but in the Visconti Homo Sapiens Chiantishire special edition, the sombre black has been replaced with clarity, gold, and rich red.

In this pens, Visconti have moved Homo Sapiens on from the age of darkness, fire and bronze to the days of sunshine and wine. The cap, section and piston knob are of a rich Chianti red, marbled in white and subtly speckled with gold; the body is produced in a transparent lacquer swirled with wine-red and gold that produces a deliciously-rippled demonstrator that, as you turn the body, shades the gold and the red together to bring dreams of sunshine and Chianti. The pen is filled by means of the piston knob, using Visconti’s double-reservoir power filling system.

The trade-mark Ponte Vecchio Visconti clip and other metal trim are of sterling silver, with additional palladium plating on the mid-band, the trim around the piston knob, and the two finial caps; in addition, the clip is enameled in white around the Visconti lettering. As with all Visconti pens, the cap finial can be personalised using the “My Pen” system.

As with all the Homo Sapiens pens, the Chiantishire features Visconti’s “push-and-twist” ‘Hook Safe’ closure system to keep the cap and pen firmly together when closed. Make no mistake, this is a large pen, in the tradition of its forebears, but is not adjudged unwieldy. Some find the cap – which is a significant proportion of the all-up weight – a little heavy to write with in the posted position.

The pen comes in a splendid presentation box, along with a bottle of Visconti ink and the usual booklets. The Homo Sapiens Chiantishire fountain pen is produced with a 23 carat Palladium nib, which is available in Fine, Medium, and Broad. A Stub nib is also available, at an extra cost.
