Scribo La Dotta Maki-E Bamboo Fountain Pen

It is in the quietest months of the year, the slow winter months where even nature holds its breath, that the Japanese tradition Shōchiku-Bai Takes place, known as the ‘Three Winter Friends’ it represents Pine, Bamboo, and Plum. Three plants that are able to withstand even the coldest times of the year without yielding, Traditional symbols of moral strength, perseverance, and a wish of good fortune for the year ahead. Bamboo in particular is said to be associated with resilience, able to bend in the harsh winter winds without breaking.

Scribo have entrusted the creation of this limited edition La Dotta to Urushi master Takeshi Matsuyama a guardian of the traditional craft. The resin body of the pen has been layered with an Ishime finish, giving each pen a unique natural texture, upon which has been layered Maki-e decoration, meticulously crafted with gold and silver powders drawing the delicate bamboo motifs across the pens body, the nib of the pen also carries its own tribute, available in Scribos range of 18ct and 14ct gold nibs, it features a dedicated engraving of bamboo, a discrete personal detail designed to be visible to the one who writes.

Each piece has been produced as part of a limited edition of 68 pens, each engraved with their numbering, and name “Bamboo Limited Edition” engraved on the golden ring of the piston filling mechanism. The signatures of the artist and of Scribo have been engraved onto the cap creating a delicate dialogue on the pen that speaks to it’s Italian identity and Japanese culture. This combination of ritual and tradition continues into the pens packaging, a handmade wooden box closed with a cord in a pure Japanese style, the fountain pen delicately wrapped in a pen pouch made from kimono fabric, a gesture of protection and good fortune that evokes the slow, reverent rhythms of tradition.
