Onoto Magna Plunger-Filler Black Fountain Pen

The Onoto Magna Plunger-Filler Black fountain pen is a modern version of the original pen design produced in 1905 by de la Rue to George Sweetser’s patent that led to the foundation of Onoto as a ‘child’ company of Thomas de la Rue, although this pen is closer to the one produced by Onoto in 1937, also called the Onoto Magna, that became known as “the pen”.

It is made from high-quality high-gloss black acrylic lacquer, and has sterling silver fittings. These consist of the broad cap band that bears the sterling silver hallmarks and the signature of Roger Wolfe (the designer of the current safety plunger mechanism), the beautifully-sprung TDLR clip, and finial buttons at the top of the cap and the end of the barrel. The button at the top of the cap features Onoto’s logo engraved on a frosted background.

The Onoto Magna Plunger-Filler black fountain pen is extremely durable because of its construction, and is a wonderfully-balanced writing instrument. It has an extra safety feature inasmuch as it has a cut-off valve to seal the ink reservoir when the pen is not in use. The pen can easily be made ready for use by rotating the valve by half a turn anti-clockwise, or sealed by turning a half-turn clockwise.

In addition to the engraved and hallmarked silver trim, the barrel of the Onoto Magna Plunger Filler fountain pen is engraved with the words “ONOTO the PEN“, and “Made in England“. The pen is fitted with the beautiful Onoto Number 7 18-carat gold nib that gives a luxuriously-smooth action. It comes as standard in Fine, Medium or Broad, but it can also be fitted with a stub nib customised to your personal requirements. There is an additional charge for this customisation, and we will need to contact you if you add this specification, to determine your wishes. There will obviously be a longer waiting time whilst the nib is made for you.

There are two other customisation options available for the Onoto Magna Plunger Filler fountain pen. You can choose to have added weight (7 grams) if you prefer a pen with more heft, or you can choose to have an additional rollerball tip, with sterling silver and black lacquer finish. Note that these two modifications are mutually exclusive – you can have one or the other, but not both. The rollerball option gives you the fountain pen with an additional section that accepts a rollerball refill, allowing you to swap between one and the other simply by unscrewing one and screwing in the other.
