The Onoto Magna Classic Blue with Gold Fittings is beautiful fountain pen in the tradition of the original Onoto Magna, first made in 1937. This luxury writing instrument is molded in the same deep-lustre blue acrylic resin as the original pen, with the same accompaniments, in sterling silver plated with gold, but is brought up-to-date with modern fountain pen technology. The original was a safety plunger-filler, but the current version has been altered to fit modern tastes as a cartridge/converter pen. It still, though, has the original inscription on the barrel, to the effect that it is “ONOTO the PEN” and “Made in England“.

There are some differences in the trim from the original. The modern Magna classic has a series of three sterling silver rings, plated with gold, at the cap band, rather than one large one, but the chevron Onoto clip is the same, as are the buttons on the cap and barrel finials, especially the cap finial, which bears the Onoto cipher on a brushed background that links this pen to its 1930s ancestor. The centre one of the three bands features the hallmarks.

The cap and body are comfortable, being made of solid acrylic lacquer that makes the pen durable and delicious to handle, and this writing instrument is perfectly balanced and beautiful to hold so is easy to write with, even for long periods. If you would prefer it heavier, then we can ask Onoto to add an extra 7 grams to the weight, for a small extra charge.

The nibs available with the Onoto Magna Classic Blue fountain pen come primarily as a choice of stainless steel (bi-coloured with gorgeous gold plating) or 18carat gold, both of which are available as standard in Fine, Medium or Broad. However, if you choose “Nib Modification” from the options to the right, then we can ask Onoto to grind you almost any nib you want – stub, calligraphy, oblique right – you name it!
If you specify this option, then we will contact you to determine the nib you want, and we hope that you will understand that there will be a delay while your perfect nib is made for you. There will be an extra charge for this service.

This pen can also be supplied with a rollerball conversion kit in acrylic resin and silver. This is in addition to the fountain pen nib, allowing to change your pen to a rollerball simply by unscrewing one tip from the barrel (as you would to replace the cartridge) and screwing in the other. NOTE that this option is not compatible with the extra weight option, so please do not choose both in the options list.

This truly is a very British pen, and we at Write Here are proud to offer you the chance to buy the Onoto Magna Classic Blue with Gold Fittings to buy online or, if you’re in our area, from our shop in Shrewsbury, in the UK.
