Those with very long memories will recall that one of the handier aspects of pre-decimal currency was that twelve – dodici, in Italian – is divisible by six, four, two and Leonardo’s favourite number, three. But there’s more to this handsome multi-faceted pen than mere numerology.

Vulcanica Deep Black, as the firm call this finish, emulates the glossy tone of volcanic glass, which complements the angular construction to make quite a statement before the pen has even been uncapped. If your friends and colleagues aren’t immediately impressed by the Fenice nib (they will be soon enough) there are tales to tell of volcanology first.

The nib range includes an elastic EF, for those like plenty of line variation in #6 size, as well as a good choice in the larger #8 size too. Gold or rhodium trim is available to match the nib, naturally, and the transparent ink window serves to show how much ink is left in the barrel.

Owners are unlikely to run out quickly, as the proprietary piston system has a respectable 1.5ml capacity. Unusually for such a premium pen this also comes with a small steel spanner to service the piston at home.
