Sailor Kurenai Limited Edition Fountain Pen

Nature has always provided us with some spectacular images and colors and the changing hues and shades especially at Sunset and Sunrise (dawn) have always inspired artistic impression.

Urushi Maki-e Artist – Wataru Kurotobi has taken unusually abstract views of both these events and has drawn inspiration from his study of the Forest at sunset and the Ocean at sunrise. In particular the variation of color and shade over the space of time has been captured by his artwork for this special Limited edition series created by Sailor.

!!!!Saya Nuri !!!!
The artist has used the traditional Urushi decoration technique known as Saya-Nuri or Kawari -Nuri. This technique is said to have its origins back in the fief system of the Edo period 1615-1868 when local craftsmen used a range of techniques to decorate the sword scabbards and make them noticeably different. With the abolition of the wearing of swords in public in 1876 this Urushi technique was applied to other small items.
The First in the series of unique designs is the ‘Kurenai’ – Forest Sunset

It is Sunset -‘Yuuyake’ and the tranquil forest displays a deep crimson red color (‘Kurenai’) This is the special time when the deep red light seeps through the dark green of the trees before night finally falls. The gradation of the yellow to Dark Green portrays the ever changing of colour in the forest with the gradual fading of the day at Sunset. The artist has created the specially coloured maki-e design to share the feeling of the passing moments in time as the light of sunset seeps through the trees.

In 1911, Mr. Kyugoro Sakata, an Engineer from Hiroshima, Japan, was introduced to the fountain pen when his long-time friend, a British sailor, demonstrated one to him. Mr. Sakata was so intrigued by the design and function of the pen he decided to begin a company to craft the finest writing instruments in the world. In honor of his British friend, he chose to name the company Sailor Pens. He was determined to produce the most elegant and sophisticated writing instruments in the world. His passion was to make writing an alluring adventure, to expand Sailor's market to the world, as a sailor explores the world. The Sailor Pen Company has proudly maintained this heritage of quality and technical perfection over the years. Still today, it offers the customer a unique variety of writing instruments that enhance the pleasures of the writing experience. The attention to nib design and production is second to none.
