Montegrappa first produced the Ducale brand in the 1930s, to mark the top echelon of the Elmo range of fountain pens. The Montegrappa Ducale Murano Sabbia fountain pen’s name thus has a long pedigree and association with quality pens; the Ducale (or ‘Ducal’) range draw their inspiration from the Ventian Doge’s palace, one of the “must see” tourist destinations of the city.

The addition of the ‘Murano’ name commemorates the island in the Lagoon at Venice that has long been associated with the production of beautiful, richly-coloured glassware; finally, the ‘Sabbia’ part of the name is associated with the sands used in the manufacture of that glass.

The luxuriant mix of resins that colour the cap, barrel and section of the Montegrappa Ducale Murano Sabbia fountain pen are reminiscent of Murano glass, in this case pearlescent white and sea yellow-green with strokes of dark sea grey, which are set off beautifully with the palladium-plated trim. The trim consists of the wide band at the top of the cap that features Montegrappa’s scripted trademark, the strong spring clip that features the wheel at its end that (like so many pens made in Italy) prevents damage to silk shirts, jackets or handbag linings. There are additional bands at the end of the screw-fit cap, and one last one at the top of the pen.

This pen will suit those with larger hands, and fans of longer pens – when posted, the Montegrappa Ducale Murano Sabbia is 177mm long (which is about 7″ in old money) and, given that the cap weighs more than the pen, writers with smaller hands may wish to leave the cap on the desk!

The Montegrappa Ducale Murano Sabbia Fountain Pen is available with Fine, Medium or Broad nibs in Palladium-coated steel, decorated with the manufacturer’s trademark and their characteristically-intricate scrollwork etching.

We are pleased to be able to offer this marvellous writing instrument to buy online, or in person from our shop in Shrewsbury, in the UK.
