The name “Laid” comes for the technique by which the paper was made in the past. The solution of wood, cotton or other material was “laid” to dry on a wire frame, thus leaving an impression of the wires. “Vellum” refers back to the use of calf skin for writing on – it was scraped to give a flat surface.
