Russian- born French illustrator Emmanuel Poiré, named Caran d'Ache and reached huge success in the 19th century, becoming world renowned. This name was fitting, the Russian term 'karandash' meaning pencil in turn is derived from the Turkish 'kara tash', referring to black stone, the origin of graphite.
Arnold Schweitzer opened the first pencil factory of its kind in Switzerland, his company specialised in using the natural material found in the Swiss mountains to make his pencils, after nine years of business he chose to use the name Caran d'Ache from the famous illustrator, and rebranded his company in this name.
