Founded in 421 A.D., Venice is without a shadow of a doubt a masterpiece of nature, developed through 400 years of barbaric invasions and unparalleled wealth. It has grown organically, not simply developed by an architect's hand.
Since the 7th century A.D. Venice, a maritime republic, represented the main connection between East and West. This position greatly contributed to its cultural development, allowing Venice to become one of the finest cities in Europe and, during the Renaissance, one of the most influential on art, architecture and the literature of the time.
After one thousand years of complete independence, on May 12, 1797, the Doge, Ludovico Manin, and his High Council were forced to abdicate. Napoleon established a Temporary Government and annexed Venice to the Austro - Hungarian Empire, under whose control it remained until, in 1866, Venice joined Italy. This annexation was enforced the same year by a plebiscite held on October 21, supported by 99.9% of the electorate.
